Most Important: Annual Service

It is important for your boat to receive an annual service. This annual service includes preventative maintenance and should be scheduled each fall. The timing of this annual service is very important. After a season of use, contaminated fluids and oils must be removed from your boat. This avoids damaging corrosion that can occur as your boat is used less frequently in the winter.

Your boat's annual service includes the following:

  • Filter, oil, transmission and stern drive fluid change
  • Check engine alignment
  • Check and adjust engine timing
  • Conduct general systems inspection

Don't delay this important service! Schedule your annual service in the fall. If you wait until the spring to schedule your annual service, you increase the chances of damage to your engine. Consider combining your annual service with storage and freeze protection to save time and money.

New Owners: 20 - Hour Service

Most boats will need the first maintenance and inspection between 20 and 30 hours of use. Some may need a filter change; others may require an oil change or more. As you use your boat in its new environment, inspections and adjustments are necessary to keep your boat in top working order.

As you operate your new boat, keep track of any questions or concerns you have regarding your new boat's operation and we will address these issues during the 20-hour check.

  • Keep a list of concerns regarding your boat to be addressed at this initial service.

If you took delivery on your boat in the late summer or fall, it may be possible to combine your 20-hour inspection and annual service in one appointment. Please consult with our service department staff.

Service Timing

Boating is highly seasonal. As people run their boats regularly over the spring and summer months, problems occur. During the warmer months, service facilities can become overwhelmed repairing mechanical failures and major damage caused by accidents and underwater impacts.

Bringing your boat in for routine maintenance, minor cosmetic repairs, or accessory installations in these months will lead to congestion and longer turn-around times for you and your fellow boaters. To maximize the time you and other boaters get to spend on the water, Sail & Ski recommends scheduling these service visits during the fall and winter months.

During the busy spring and summer months, our service department prioritizes work and focuses first on any repairs that would prevent customers from using their boats.

1. SAFETY: components or systems critical to your boat's safe operation
2. PROPERTY PROTECTION: stabilization of your boat after an accident or submersion
3. ENGINE OPERATION: failures causing your engine to run poorly or not at all
4. ENGINE INSTRUMENTATION and systems monitoring equipment
5. SYSTEMS OPERATIONS: head and water systems, generators, air conditioners etc
6. ELECTRONICS: stereos, GPS, depth finder, etc.
8. COSMETICS and minor fiberglass repair
